2013 FR-S Signals Change of Direction At Scion

For a while we’ve been wondering about the future of the Scion brand. The past few years it has largely been stagnant except for the redesigned tC. Then came the iQ and Toyota’s announcement that the FT-86 would be sold as a Scion FR-S. That was an important step in determining the future of the Scion brand. Sales at Scion need a boost: xB and xD were just cut recently due to poor sales. When that announced, we concluded Scion was in need of fresh investment and renewed direction. Apparently Toyota has been thinking the same thing. Automotive News reports that Toyota has decided on a path forward after a nine month review of the brand. Scion has always been known for its funkiness and emphasis on the youth market. Instead of being “out there” though, the plan is apparently to move to a more mainstream approach. This has already been seen to a certain extent in advertisements for the FR-S. That car doesn’t need any gimmicks to sell itself. As for the replacement for the xB though, Vice President Jack Hollis said it might not be called xB, or even be a box. “We may not replace the xB by name, one-for-one,” says Hollis. “The first generation, we needed the box. The second generation, we still liked the box, but we started looking for things that would stand out like the box. No one is saying [the next one] has to be a box.” Thinking outside the box right? Last year, Scion buyers had an average age of 43, compared to the industry average of 51. That makes Scion the most youthful brand in the industry. At launch though, Scion had an average buyer age of 45. It is clearly trending older, and Scion is going to try to balance the between the two. Generation Y isn’t the primary focus at Scion anymore apparently. Scion has built its whole brand image on being funky and different though so we aren’t sure going mainstream is the best thing. Hyundai and Kia seem to have stolen a bit of Scion’s thunder with the Veloster and Soul. With attributes like fuel economy and “precise handling” on the list for Scion, we may be seeing some different type of Scions than ever before. For Toyota, hopefully they are better selling ones too. No related posts. Automoblog.net – A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Buy a New Scion iQ, Get a Free Sony Playstation Vita

Connected and very technology savvy, the younger driving crowd test drives a full assortment of vehicles in the virtual world. Through incredible rich video gaming experiences such as the Gran Turismo and Project Gotham Racing series, it’s possible for some gamers to become completely familiar with a car without stepping into a dealership. Another notable driving game in what is a wide selection of racing titles is MotorStorm RC. Recently introduced for the Sony Playstation 3 and the all-new Playstation Vita handheld console, North American Toyota brand Scion positioned their newly released iQ subcompact car. As a real-world vehicle starting at $15,265, 2012 iQs will bring the gaming experience of MotorStorm RC and other Sony Playstation Vita titles to Scion buyers of the mini car. From May 1st to July 31st, purchase of the nifty, fuel-efficient Scion iQ will come with an additional perk from a popular electronic entertainment device company. A $250 premium, the Sony Playstation Vita portable gaming console will be a hot inclusion with the Scion buying experience. A highly evolved game unit, the Sony Playstation Vita delivers a new generation of on-the-go entertainment (provided when you are not behind the wheel of the Scion iQ. Speaking in regards to the latest dealer promotion with Sony, Scion vice president Jack Hollis declares the product pairing with the iQ as an ideal match. “Similar to the PS Vita, the Scion iQ comes loaded with premium technological features, has a focus on functionality, is concentrated into a suitably small package and most importantly is tons of fun.” said Hollis. While the high-profile offering of a game console with a car purchase is unique for Toyota, high-profile portable electronics have been paired with another vehicle sale as of late. Every 2011 model of the Hyundai Equus luxury sedan, an Apple iPad is standard pre-loaded with the interactive owner’s manual. Hyundai discontinued the inclusion of the Apple iPad into the 2012 model year. Considering the fact the Equus retail price of $59,000, the Scion iQ deal with the Sony Playstation Vita could be seen as a better bang for the buck. The partnership with the Sony Playstation Vita comes as Toyota’s youth-oriented brand fights gain greater support from their target demographic. The rock-bottom price on the Scion mini-car (sometimes referenced as a kei-car in parts of the world) met with a standard feature package that includes 11 air bags, 160-watt Pioneer stereo system and Bluetooth connectivity should make the Sony Playstation Vita icing on the cake after nearly 37 miles per gallon driving during the upcoming summer season. With Sales Flagging, Scion xB, xD Get Cut

It’s a costly endeavor starting a new brand from scratch. Just ask Hyundai, which is reticent about spending the cash to launch a new luxury brand, despite the possibility of juicy profit margins. Scion has been an interesting exercise for Toyota. The Toyota brand itself has lost a lot of younger buyers. Scion was pitched as a way to fix that, positioned as an “experimental” division. Roughly nine years later, Scion is announcing that it is cutting two models – the xB and xD. The xB is the car that started it all for Scion, and it is being cut? Crazy we know. The boxy original was successful – the redesign, not so much. The original sold in nee volumes, which begs the question why Scion doesn’t try to take the xB back to the basics for another go at it. The original had a formula that worked. Ironically Hyundai/Kia seems to have usurped Scion’s position with the Veloster and the Soul. They’re doing something right over there. If it wasn’t for the new FR-S being launched as a Scion, we’d be wondering about the future of the brand. We still are a bit… As of today, the lineup will include the FR-S, iQ and the tC coupe. The iQ won’t be a volume seller, so it’ll be interesting to see what else is in the works for the brand going forward. Given that Scion dealers are within Toyota stores though, there isn’t as much of an impetus to push for heavy volume. Placing FR-S over at Scion makes even more sense in light of these cuts to the product line. If you’ll remember, some of the Scions of the past actually appealed to many older buyers. For the first time we could see the FR-S bringing in a heavily youth-dominated demographic to the brand. Give us more cars like the FR-S (such as a sedan version!) at Scion and we’ll be happy. To have a hope of succeeding, somewhere along the line Scion will need to define what it wants to be again. Automoblog.net – A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Canadian University’s Research Seeks Extending EV Battery Life

? Entering the first major build-up in electrified vehicle construction in over 100 years , the increased use of battery-derived propulsion ushers forth automotive engineering methodology. Instead of planning a four-wheel vehicle around an internal combustion engine, electric car construction invites a new choir of design and science to dictate what many consider a new frontier in motoring. Realizing this new advent of electric cars, the lithium-ion battery family have been the dominating technology for hybrid and all-electric powerplant development. Generally compact, high capacity and reasonable cost, lithium-ion polymer batteries are the centerpiece in the modern-era venture into near zero-emissions driving. Whereas the Toyota Prius and other members of the Hybrid Synergy Drive have given optimism for decade-long battery-assisted motoring, the Japanese auto brand is one of the few automakers still committed to the out-of-style nickel-metal hydride batteries. Automakers developing electrified propulsion vehicles have chosen lithium-ion batteries based on many desirable attributes including weight and charging behaviour. However, there are several drawbacks to lithium-ion battery technology. ? ? While the electrical power packs are commonly associated as lithium-ion batteries, there are various different chemistries and constructions being field-tested. Defining the construction of a few popular vehicles, the Coda electric car is equipped with a lithium-ion iron phosphate battery , the Chevrolet Volt as well as the Nissan Leaf uses lithium manganese spinel technology and the future foresees advancing developments such as lithium-air combinations. Intent on zeroing in on the winning combination for low-cost, long distance travel, the science and technology behind lithium-ion batteries has been racing forward in order to claim a competitive advantage. Instead of working directly on developing a most efficient lithium-ion battery for future electric cars, a recently announced endeavour by Canada’s McMaster University will be devoted into unlocking mysteries in the operation of lithium-ion batteries. ? ? A university-private research partnership with General Motors of Canada, Bruker Ltd. and Heka Electronics, the 3.5 million-Canadian dollar, four-year study will focus on defining several factors in advancing lithium-ion battery technology. Aiming to increase battery efficiency and overall life, the more unique aspect to the McMaster University research is how they will measure the degradation of a lithium-ion battery. Known as cell depth, the rate of decay of lithium-ion batteries has yet been reliably measured. “The processes that lead to cell degradation are difficult to study because they happen while the cell is running and any process you do to look at that, requires you to take apart the cell, means you don’t know whether or not you interfered with the processes that are going on by taking it apart.” said Associate Professor of Chemistry at McMaster University Gillian Goward. In order to pinpoint the rate and behaviour of cell degradation over the course of an active battery’s life, the Canadian lab work will incorporate sensors into working lithium-ion packs. “From my experimental work is the really new piece, we’ve been working in lithium battery chemistry for a long time, but mostly studying cell that we disassembled or just the pure material that was used in the cathode.“ said Goward. The McMaster University research partnership will analyze an assortment of conventional lithium-ion battery combinations in order to identify optimum performance and durability. ? ? As well as enhancing the life span of lithium-ion batteries, the McMaster University’s Gillian Goward also explained the research is hoping to improve battery driving and charging performance in varying temperatures. Many of us following the Chevrolet Volt are familiar with test drive articles where observed colder weather driving distance is as low as half of the vehicle’s top electric-only driving range. Currently, lithium-ion batteries need to utilize methods of climate control to insure the best performance from their battery pack. Offsetting some of the weight-saving advantages made possible through lithium-ion batteries over nickel-metal hydride units, the main reason for adding temperature-controlling components to electric vehicles is because the ideal operating climate for lithium-ion battery electrolytes requires more specific climate conditions. When it comes to charging, lithium-ion batteries lack to ability of charging effectively during temperatures below the freezing point. “This is one of things General Motors is really keen to look for is electrolytes that provides the lithium-ion (operations) at the range of temperature we would typically see in North America.” said Gillian Goward. Searching for an electrolyte that would operate in a target temperature range between -50 to +50 degrees Celsius is someone McMaster University‘s research plans to identify. Goward stated that General Motors has already patented a candidate material but it is still waiting electro-chemical study. A four-year study, the joint university-private enterprise research is confident that advances can be found in electric vehicle technology. It is very likely consumers can began seeing the progresses in lithium-ion batteries resulting in production-geared electrified vehicle in just two years. While there are no promises that lithium-ion battery advancements will reduce prices of electric vehicles, gains in making these cars more attractive to the lifestyles of general motorists will decrease cost per unit for technology. ? 2012 Scion TC Review

Advantages Excellent crash scores; comfortable ride; easy purchase experience; snappy performance; well equipped; spacious, reclining back seat; smart iPod interface. Disadvantages Not that sporty as it looks; droning exhaust and engine note with automatic transmission; mediocre fuel economy; cheap interior materials. Introduction 2012 Scion TC is an affordable yet well equipped coupe, which benefits from the company’s attention to reliability, quality and durability. It is sold towards the young first-time shopper seeking a sporty and hip urban vehicle. For 2012, it gains an upgraded base stereo system that features HD radio capability and Bluetooth audio streaming. The limited edition Release Series 7.0 also debuts, sporting a body kit, keyless ignition and entry and flashy yellow paint. Introduced in the year 2004, the TC quickly became one of the best selling vehicles of the company, simultaneously attracting the youngest shopper in the entire industry. 6 years later, the 2nd generation TC was launched with increased driving performance, a more premium feel and an aggressive new look. Improved performance is accomplished in the 2nd generation TC with a new inline four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with dual VVT-i which churns out 180 horsepower, 19 more unlike its predecessor, and 11 additional pound feet of torque. Besides increases in power, the new powerplant delivers an increase in fuel economy all while lowering emissions. Performance is further enhanced and heard through a sport tuned exhaust system and a new intake manifold design, which delivers an aggressive and bold sound. The Scion TC is basically a vehicle developed, designed and marketed by a division of Toyota , Scion . It was launched in the year 2004 in United States and in 2010 in Canada. The name TC doesn’t fit in with its stablemates the XA, XB, and XD, as the name XC designation has already been used by the Swedish automaker, Volvo for its lineup of sport utility vehicles. As per the company, TC stands for touring coupe. It is marketed as Toyota Zelas in China, Middle East and South and Central America. The Japanese automaker launched the production TC in 2004 at North American International Auto Show with sales starting in June 2004 as a 2005 model. It was designed and engineered to appeal to Millennial market. It shares its chassis with Avensis and uses a double wishbone rear and MacPherson strut front suspension. Its low price is a major feature, as well as the pure monospec pricing marketing style which Toyota has adopted. Major standard equipments included cruise control, power windows, keyless entry, air conditioning, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, mirror mounted turn signal lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof and a 160-watt Pioneer sound system with CD player. It received a minor redesign in 2007 for 2008 model year which included new head and taillamps and a redesigned grille. A bare bones version of TC called Spec Package was available without many of standard accessories. The Spec Package replaces the 17-inch alloy wheels with seven spoke wheel covers and 16-inch steel wheels. The glass roof is fixed in place, while the steering wheel is constructed of urethane rather than wrapped leather and lacks audio controls and many other minor exterior and interior enhancements. Limited edition vehicles from a marketing standpoint were used for creating a buzz for the brand name, with their exterior colors tending to be loud or bright hues (including yellow, orange, blue, red and green). Because of the growing popularity of Scion product line and scarce production runs, these limited edition vehicles quickly sell out. The all-new design of 2012 Scion TC projects a more aggressive, bolder stance. Inspired by Calty-designed Scion Fuse concept, it is a high impact sports coupe with unique and simple elements. Calty designers took inspiration from the athletic look of racing helmet. Consequently, one of the boldest design features of TC it its sleek cabin shape with wrap around window graphics, which add to its sporty profile. Adding to the fresh design approach is a renegade, strong face. The projector headlamps and sleek front grille are complemented by protruding fender flares that intensify its lower, wider stance. The rear taillights’ shape flows cleanly into the overall shape of the trunk, concluding the purposeful and iconic nature of the design. It can be wrapped in an urban palette of seven colors: Silver Streak Mica, Super White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Black, Nautical Blue Metallic, the all-new Cement and Sizzling Crimson Mica. During mid-2000s, the TC was one of the reasonably priced coupes on the road. Yet like most things which are attractive to young buyers, its popularity waned over time. The 2nd generation TC launched in 2011 is intended for recapturing some of the model’s former fame. Certainly, there is a lot to like here with the latest TC, including hatchback versatility, snappy performance and an attractive value proposition. It also takes into account the younger generation’s affinity for electronics with a standard stereo system engineered specifically for an iPod. Albeit the 2012 Scion TC has numerous overtly sporty touches (including well bolstered seats and a beefy flat-bottomed steering wheel), it is more show than go. With its aggressively styled body kit, the new Release Series 7.0 is no hard-edged sports machine. The combination of pleasant driving dynamics, supple ride and broad power delivery will likely appeal to a broader spectrum of drivers than would something with stiff underpinnings and a peaky engine. There are quite a lot of other models in the market such as Kia Forte Koup and Honda Civic coupe. The all-new Hyundai Veloster is also worth serious consideration given its superior feature content and innovative three-door design, but the enjoyable yet practical 2012 TC has plenty to recommend it, in spite of its existence out of the spotlight. Variants, Body Types and Features The 2012 Scion TC is a compact hatchback coupe that offers comfortable seating capacity for five passengers and is offered base and Release Series 7.0 trim levels. Standard features and equipments on base TC include keyless entry, 18-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, air-conditioning, a panoramic sunroof, full power accessories, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a height adjustable driver seat, driver track and seatback angle memory for rear seat access, folding and reclining 60/40-split rear seats and a Pioneer eight-speaker surround sound system with HD radio, CD player, an iPod/USB interface, RCA output jacks and an auxiliary audio jack. Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity is also standard for 2012. The Release Series 7.0, of which only 2200 will be made, comes exclusively in “High Voltage” yellow and gets black 18 inch wheels, a lower body kit, yellow accented black upholstery and keyless ignition and entry. Besides an automatic transmission, there are no factory options. Nevertheless, there are numerous dealer installed items, including satellite radio, a navigation system, an auto dimming rearview mirror, upgraded audio, remote ignition, seven-color interior mood lighting, foglights, a rear spoiler and a cargo cover. What’s Beneath the Hood of 2012 Scion TC? Motivation for the 2012 Scion TC comes from an inline four-cylinder 2.5 liter engine, which is good for pulsating 180 horsepower with 173 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to either standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission. In performance testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 7.3 seconds and offered the fuel economy of 31 mpg highway, 23 mpg city and 26 mpg in combined driving. Safety & Reliability Standard safety features on 2012 Scion TC include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, front knee airbags, active front headrests and side curtain airbags. In brake testing, the TC came to a stop in a respectable 123 feet from 60 miles per hour. In government testing, the TC got 5 out of 5 stars for overall crash protection with 5 stars for side impact protection and 4 stars for frontal impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave TC it highest score of “Good” in the side impact, roof strength and frontal offset tests. Special Features and Cockpit Design The elegant design of 2012 Scion TC carries over to the interior with a feel and look, which is sporty, functional and sophisticated. The front cockpit design offers a driver centered cockpit with freedom and spaciousness for front passenger. The tilt and telescopic steering column heel features a flat bottom which offers additional thigh room. Dual illuminated combination meters for the tachometer and speedometer have a 3D appearance with large needle indicators and meters for excellent visibility. The trip meters also include gauges for average MPG, an ECO drive indicator on automatic gearbox models which helps driver maximize its fuel efficiency and outside temperature. It doesn’t sacrifice passenger and driver comfort. As part of the facelift, the engineers made significant interior updates in the area of passenger and driver convenience and comfort. The 2012 Scion TC comes with a powerful standard audio system with a total of 300W feeding the 8-speaker sound package. With an emphasis on amazing sound quality, its audio system shares some speaker components with Lexus LX 570, and gets woofer and midrange speakers that are superior. It comes standard with a Pioneer AM/FM/CD head unit with USB iPod connectivity. Driving Impressions The 2012 Scion TC can best be described as an urban agile, which means the vehicle, which is involving and responsive enough to keep you entertained while comfortably commuting around town, but not that elegant that you would relish driving it on a back road somewhere. It provides drivers a choice of 2 all-new six-speed transmissions, each providing excellent fuel economy and driving excitement. The manual transmission gains confident shifts which are precise and direct, while the automatic boasts sequential shifting, offering an additional fun to drive element. Vehicle Stability Control helps prevent loss of traction and wheelslip by applying brake force to the wheels that need it and reducing engine power. Antilock Braking System helps prevent brakes from locking up by pulsing brake pressure to each wheel to help you stay in control in emergency braking conditions. From amps to moving boxes, its ABS technology has EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) to help keep the vehicle balanced when braking-particularly if cargo is in the back. Some people just want an elegant vehicle, which is economical to drive and cheap to buy. And, at its $18,275 well equipped starting price that is exactly what Scion has crafted with the 2012 TC.

2012 Subaru Tribeca – Solid midsize SUV

Advantages Stylish cockpit design; standard four-wheel drive system. Disadvantages Pricey; cramped 3rd row seat; unimpressive fuel economy; limited cargo capacity; steering wheel doesn’t telescope. Introduction 2012 Subaru Tribeca is a well equipped, seven passenger sport utility vehicle, which continues to provide drivers a safe comfortable ride in any kind of road condition or weather. It has a few things going for it, but in the end most other midsize crossover sport utility vehicles will be better choices. You will always remember the little things. The perfect restaurant you found in that tiny town; ice cream victory celebrations with the kids; Sundays at the park with the dog. Fortunately your Tribeca is built to help them all happen with a comfortable and refined interior for up to seven and storage for all your belongings. And because no two road situations are ever the same, the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system sends power to all wheels for maximum control and for delivering a responsive drive. Wherever you are headed, time spent together will be the time of your life. The Subaru Tribeca is basically a midsize crossover sport utility vehicle marketed by Subaru since 2005, an automobile manufacturing division of Japanese transportation conglomerate FHI (Fuji Heavy Industries). Revealed in some markets as Subaru B9 Tribeca, the term Tribeca derives from New York City’s TriBeCa neighborhood. Developed and designed on Subaru Legacy platform and marketed in 5 and 7-seat configurations, the Tribeca was formerly intended to be marketed alongside a slightly redesigned version called Saab 9-6. Saab, at the time a subsidiary of GM (General Motors), abandoned the 9-6 program just prior to its release a decision forced by General Motors’ disposal of its 20% stake in FHI in 2005. The Tribeca was first launched as “B9 Tribeca” in various markets and featured a new corporate face of a rounded body shape and a triangular grille. The company also used the grille styling on Impreza, and the Japanese market Subaru R2 and R1 kei car products. North American market Tribeca models were available in two trims; the Limited and the standard Tribeca that added leather interior, a moonroof, a premium stereo system with in-dash six-disc CD changer and roof rails for improved cargo carrying. The interior colors were somewhat limited to either dark gray cloth or a choice of light beige or dark gray leather interior. The Limited trim level included an in-dash multifunction screen which displayed audio system information, navigation system information, outside temperatures, trip computer functions, controls for several vehicle settings, maintenance intervals, calculator, memo taking functions and calendar. Video input from rearseat DVD entertainment system was offered with 3rd row seating only and could only be showed on the instrument panel center screen if the vehicles parking brake was engaged. FHI (Fuji Heavy Industries Inc.), the manufacturing company of Subaru automobiles announced its plan for introducing the redesigned Subaru B9 Tribeca, now named Subaru Tribeca. Advancing the concept of a progressive sports utility vehicle, the new Tribeca features improved performance, powerful new styling and enhanced comfort and functionality. Its exterior design stresses a more sport utility vehicle-like appearance with a new front face design. The Tribeca comes equipped with a newly designed 3.6-liter boxer engine. Albeit more powerful and larger unlike the previous 3.0-liter engine, this new powerplant delivers both enhanced fuel efficiency and performance in real world driving conditions. Design modifications in its cooling system have enabled the use of regular unleaded fuel, a change from premium only—helping to lower consumer operating costs. The 2012 Subaru Tribeca’s exterior design is powerful and streamlined, building upon the dynamic and sporty feel of previous model. Interior designs express a sophisticated quality look and sportiness. Every journey requires its own cargo and that is why Tribeca provides all kinds of smart ways to pack, store and secure it, including a three-way split sliding second row. The responsiveness, smooth ride and balance found in the Tribeca are rarely seen in other crossover utility vehicles, with its AWD, well-tuned suspension and Subaru Boxer engine. The combination of all these features makes for a safer and punchy ride around town. Because power in some AWD systems must route through extra components, these systems not only sacrifice efficiency, but also can incur more wear and tear. The All Wheel Drive in Tribeca routes power directly from the engine to all four wheels to keep components and frictional power losses to a minimum. The flat design of engine’s is inherently rigid and reduces the amount of vibration that “V” or inline engines with more upright pistons are subjected to during operation. The perfectly symmetrical design and flatter profile of the engine block and the fact that it sits lower in the chassis, make the overall vehicle feel more nimble and balanced versus other designs. Step on the accelerator and the revs come on smooth without the extra engineering other engines require. It’s comfortable and controlled, with plenty of power when you need it. The vehicle responds more quickly to changes in direction, which gives a feeling of tightness in turns. And it’s more likely to feel stable during maneuvers, giving you an increased feeling of being in control at all times. The intelligent and unique approach to seating and trouble-free flexibility are just two of the reasons 2012 Subaru Tribeca is a great choice for growing families. The 4-way power front-passenger’s seat and 8-way power driver’s seat, both with adjustable lumbar support enable for a comfortable and customized ride. The smart storage and seating systems include 50/50-split flat-folding 3rd-row seatbacks, enclosed storage compartments with a rear storage drawer for all of the extra things life brings and 40/20/40-split flat-folding 2nd-row seatbacks. Fold the seats into the floor and the flat cargo floor area offers 74.4 cubic feet of cargo room to accommodate the bigger things in life just as well as the little ones. Now in its 4th year of production, the Subaru Tribeca is a solid midsize crossover sport utility vehicle. About the size of a Toyota Highlander, it seats seven and is loaded with technology, starting with its world-class all-wheel-drive system, providing a luxurious interior. The Subaru Tribeca came early to the crossover party, providing a utility package wrapped around conventional Subaru automotive parts, and it seemed like a winner from the start. It embraced leading edge design with a self consciously stylish execution, while the company’s all-wheel drive and tractable engine delivered the right kind of all weather mobility. Unfortunately, it has never found the popular acclaim that Subaru anticipated. It excels at very little that’s tough when competing against other family crossovers that are more spacious, newer, boast more features and better to drive. One issue is size, as what once was just about right for 5 passengers hasn’t been enhanced by the addition of a small, cramped 3rd row seat. In the mean time, the all-weather capability and tractable drivability come at the price of some impact on fuel economy. The Subaru Tribeca falls into the vast middle ground of crossover sport utility vehicles, crowded on one side by more generic, larger midsize packages such as Nissan Murano and Ford Edge , and then measured on the other by entry level versions of premium European vehicles including Audi Q5 . Variants, Body Types and Features The 2012 Subaru Tribeca is a midsize crossover sport utility vehicle that offers comfortable seating capacity for seven passengers and is available in Limited, Touring and Premium trims. The Premium comes standard with foglamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, heated mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control with separate rear air conditioning control, reclining 40/20/40 split second row seats, heated power front seats (four-way passenger and eight-way driver), a tilt-only steering wheel, a six-speaker sound system with an auxiliary audio jack and a CD player and 50/50-split third-row seats. Opting for the Limited will get you driver seat memory functions, leather upholstery (vinyl for the third row), a Harman Kardon 10-speaker surround sound stereo system with satellite radio and a six-CD changer. The Moonroof package adds roof rails, a rearview camera and a sunroof. The Touring will get you a monotone exterior paint scheme, exclusive 18-inch wheels, an auto dimming rearview mirror, the Moonroof package and HID headlights. The Touring and Limited are available with an optional Navigation package which includes an upgraded rearview camera (that uses navigation screen for camera display instead of the rearview mirror) and a navigation system. A rearseat DVD entertainment system can be added to this package. What’s Beneath the Hood of 2012 Subaru Tribeca? Motivation for the 2012 Subaru Tribeca comes from a horizontally opposed 3.6 liter six-cylinder engine, which is good for pulsating 256 horsepower with 247 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. All Tribeca models come with all-wheel drive system, which sends 55% of power to the rear wheels under normal driving situations. In performance testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 8.3 seconds and offered the fuel economy of 21 mpg highway, 16 mpg city and 18 mpg in combined driving. Safety & Reliability Standard safety features on 2012 Subaru Tribeca include traction control, antilock brakes (with brake assist), front seat side impact airbags, stability control, active front head restraints and side curtain airbags. In brake testing, the Tribeca came to come to a stop in 121 feet from 60 miles per hour, which is little shorter unlike its rivals. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave Tribeca its top rating of “Good” in side impact, roof strength and frontal offset tests. Special Features and Cockpit Design Inside is an upmarket and luxurious cabin. We felt comfortable immediately after climbing in. Your needs and the needs of those you take with you have a way of changing all the time. The Tribeca is ready to adapt to your life with features like 40/20/40-split 2nd row. Its seatback splits three ways, so you can seat three across, or fold down one or two of the seatbacks for carrying longer items in the cargo area. And to help accommodate varying passenger needs from infants who need to be within easy reach, to adults who want all the legroom possible, the 2nd row slides almost eight inches backward and forward, and also reclines for comfort. There is no need to cry over spilled anything with ten cupholders to choose from. Every seat has one within reach. There are two in the center console, one in every door, two in 2nd row armrest. And even those in the back aren’t left out with two on each side of the 3rd row. You will also find a variety of conveniently placed storage compartments throughout the cockpit, helping you carry what you need while cutting down on clutter. With split-folding 3rd row seat, standard all Tribeca models, there is room for up to seven passengers, making it comfortable and family friendly. With the thoughtful design of the 3rd row enabling you to neatly fold down one or both of the seats; you have got easy access to more than 37 cubic feet of cargo space. Many sport utility vehicles provide a voluptuous interior. But the 2012 Subaru Tribeca fills that space with designs and innovations that are simply smart. Every square inch of the stylish interior is maximized with unique features thoughtfully placed and ingenious configurations that mean just about everything and everyone fits. The flexible design allows you conveniently fold all the seats down, creating a cargo area with 74.4 cubic feet of space. With this much space, you won’t ever have to leave anyone or anything behind. With right tunes, every drive will inspire. The Tribeca is available with the striking sounds of Harman Kardon premium stereo system featuring 10 speakers for optimum clarity, impact and harmonic richness. Choose from a variety of audio sources, including XM Satellite Radio, an auxiliary jack which you can plug your iPod or MP3 player in or an available 6-disc CD changer. With the available rearseat DVD entertainment system at your disposal, even the longest journeys can seem like short trips. Driving Impressions From behind the steering wheel, the 2012 Subaru Tribeca feels maneuverable, easy to drive and competent with the light effort steering improving an overall feeling of quickness. Safety begins with avoidance. 2012 Nissan Rogue Review

HIghlights Comfortable front seats; smooth ride; high quality interior; capable handling. Drawbacks Poor rearward visibility; short on versatility and cargo room; lacks V6 option; CVT causes engine drone. Introduction 2012 Nissan Rogue is an unusually fun to drive, comfortable crossover sport utility vehicle with an unusually nice interior. The Rogue S with Special Edition Package gives you $2200 worth of features for $1200, which include foglamps, audio system with 4.3-inch color display, XM Satellite Radio and USB connection, illuminated steering column mounted audio controls, rearview monitor and rear privacy glass. Its available Nissan Intelligent Key lets you unlock the hatch and doors by tapping a button on the handle. Once inside, you can even start the engine, all while keeping the key in your pocket or bag. The Nissan Rogue is basically a compact crossover sport utility vehicle, which was introduced in the month of October 2007 for 2008 model year, developed and designed by Japanese automobile manufacturing firm, Nissan. It is the North American version of European-designed Qashqai called the Dualis in Australia and Japan. It was introduced at the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) in Detroit on 7th January 2007 and replaces the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico and Nissan X-Trail in Canada as the company’s entry-level sport utility vehicle due to Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the 2009 Suzuki Equator. However, the Xterra continues on sale in Canada and United States after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after 2008 model year. The all-new version of X-Trail, whose platform Rogue shares, has been introduced in Mexico, Europe and elsewhere, but there are no plans to market it in both Canada and USA. Powering the original Rogue was a 170 horsepower 2.5 liter four-cylinder QR25DE engine matched to standard continuously variable transmission and front wheel drive system. It costs less unlike Nissan Murano , a crossover sport utility vehicle, but at 97.5 cubic feet vs. 108.8 cubic feet provides less passenger volume unlike its V6 powered sibling, and a smaller cargo area of 820 litres vs. 890 litres. The Nissan Rogue comes in only two trim levels in the United States: SL and S. S is the base model that comes factory equipped with air conditioning; anti-lock brakes; power windows, locks, and mirrors; cruise control; AM/FM/CD stereo with four speakers and auxiliary input jack and remote keyless entry. For 2012, the company has dropped “Krom” edition but provides a “Special Edition” package, which includes a premium audio system, 16-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, satellite radio, foglamps and rearview monitor to the S trim. Nissan also added sport mode to the CVT, one new exterior color and new aluminum-alloy wheels design. The SL package is offered on SV but now adds Nissan’s “Around View Monitor.” With the assists of four cameras, this system creates a composite top view of the vehicle’s surrounding and displays it through a LCD monitor. The Nissan Rogue crossover SUV enters the 2012 model year with a refined interior, new refreshed exterior appearance, more of the same high-value, high-fun attitude and added technology and convenience features, which has made Rogue one of the most popular compact crossover sport utility vehicles in its segment since its introduction 4 years ago. The big news for 2012 Rogue is that a series of new features, not formerly available for Rogue are available, including Rearview Monitor, Nissan Navigation System, USB port for iPod and other devices, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, auto on/off headlights and automatic climate control. Many of the new features are now standard on Rogue S like 6-way manual driver’s seat, illuminated vanity mirrors and iPod connectivity. Amongst many enhancements for the 2012 Nissan Rogue production is a redesigned exterior with new front and rear spoilers, a new front fascia and grille, new front and rear tire deflectors, a new chrome license plate finisher and new chrome side door guard molding trim accents. Also added for 2012 are new Rogue SL Package, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels for Nissan Rogue S Krom Edition, a new under body cover and new low rolling resistance tires offered with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Four new exterior colors are available: Cayenne Red, Pearl White, Black Amethyst and Frosted Steel – along with four carryover colors, Super Black, Indigo Blue, Platinum Graphite and Brilliant Silver. The exterior of 2012 Nissan Rogue is designed and engineered for presenting an image of modern sophistication. Its dramatic styling includes powerful rear shoulder lines and dynamically arched forms. The extensive redesign adds to its sporty feel, while also improving its upscale appearance. As compared to small sport utility vehicles in the segment, there is nothing toy-like about Nissan Rogue. From chrome accents to available 18-inch wheels, it has a refined, grown-up style to go with its sporty performance and look. It also features available power sliding glass moonroof with dark gray glass, available roof rails and available Xenon headlights. Body-colored bumpers, chrome door handles, power sideview mirrors and rear liftgate with fixed glass are standard. The body also features large front door openings for easy egress and ingress. The S Krom Edition includes a boldly styled rear sport fascia with incorporated center exit exhaust, a unique grille embedded in the aggressive front fascia with incorporated foglights, integrated body colored rear spoiler, body colored power outside mirrors and 18-inch aluminum alloy brilliant finish wheels. It is difficult to stand out in the crowd and increasingly so in the competitive class of small crossover sport utility vehicles. So it’s a credit to Nissan engineers and designers who have made the 2012 Nissan Rogue attract attention through a combination of agile road handling, interior refinement and sharp styling. Based on Sentra saloon, it provides utility style cargo and passenger versatility with crisper handling dynamics of a small sedan. Inside its cockpit, the high quality finish of seats, doors and dash provide this economy crossover a fairly upscale feel. The 2012 Rogue deserves a close look amongst small crossovers like Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, both of which provide more versatility and cargo room. Other competitors worth a look include Kia Sportage, Ford Edge and GMC Terrain . Variants, Body Types and Features The 2012 Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover sport utility vehicle that offers comfortable seating capacity for five passengers and is offered in two trims: SV and S. Standard on base S comes include folding side mirrors, 16-inch steel wheels, a tilt (but non-telescoping) steering wheel, cruise control, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a trip computer, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat and a four-speaker sound system with an auxiliary audio jack and a CD player. The new Special Edition package offered for the Rogue S includes foglights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a 4.3-inch-display audio screen, rear privacy glass, an upgraded sound system with steering wheel audio controls, satellite radio and a USB/iPod interface and a rearview camera. Many of those features are standard on Rouge SV. Additionally, it gets keyless ignition/entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-way power driver seat with power lumbar adjustment, upgraded upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity and a fold-down front passenger seat. There are two packages offered for the Rogue SV. The Premium package combines together automatic headlights, a sunroof, a navigation system with a real-time traffic updates and 5-inch touchscreen display and automatic climate control. The SL package includes Premium package features and gains xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, foglights, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera view, a premium Bose audio system with a subwoofer and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. What’s Beneath the Hood of 2012 Nissan Rogue? Motivation for the 2012 Nissan Rogue comes from a four-cylinder 2.5 liter engine, which is good for pulsating 170 horsepower with 175 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to continuously variable transmission with either front or four-wheel drive system. In performance testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 8.6 seconds. The estimated fuel economy for Rogue includes 28 mpg highway, 22 mpg city and 25 mpg in combined driving. Safety & Reliability Standard safety features on 2012 Nissan Rogue include stability control, antilock disc brakes, full length side curtain airbags, active front head restraints and front seat side airbags. In government testing, the Rogue got 4-star rating for overall crash protection and 5 stars for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave Rogue its highest rating of “Good” for side impact and frontal offset protection. In brake testing, the Rogue came to a stop in 121 feet from 60 miles per hour. Special Features and Cockpit Design The interior of 2012 Nissan Rogue is designed and engineered for satisfying both the emotional needs of the shoppers and their functional needs, including the versatility offered by large 58 cubic feet of cargo space. The interior includes available leather appointed seating surfaces, six-way power driver’s seat and a driver-oriented cockpit. Heated mirrors and front seats are also available along with a fold down front passenger seat that enables more than 8.5 feet of front to rear cargo space to carry long items like ladders or wood. Besides the Rearview Monitor and navigation system, available technology features include Bluetooth Handsfree Phone System (GEN3), Nissan Intelligent Key, a powerful Bose-developed audio system with AUX input, MP3 playback and 7 speakers with Nd Richbass woofer and XM Satellite Radio. A standard drive computer includes displays for average fuel consumption, distance-to-empty, elapsed time, outside temperature and average speed. The steering wheel mounted controls include Bluetooth Handsfree Phone System, cruise control and audio. Driving Impressions The promise of crossovers lies in sport utility vehicle versatility with passenger car manners. The 2012 Nissan Rogue does one better, which drives like a car with capable handling. All Nissan Rogue models come standard with Nissan Xtronic CVT, fusing linear, responsive and smooth acceleration feel with high efficiency operation. Its transmission uses a high speed central processing unit and Adaptive Shift Control, while the advanced shift control provides optimal shift pattern according to the driver’s demands and driving condition, using input from vehicle speed, driver operation, turning condition, acceleration and road gradient to adjust shifting patterns accordingly. It features an advanced, intuitive All-Wheel Drive system that helps provides excellent all-weather traction and performance. BMW and Toyota to Partner in Battery Development Deal

When the automobile launched into the 20th century, the ripe and untapped market had every little auto builder in the United States fighting for recognition on their own terms. During a early 1900s where the American automobile industry was controlled by a broad-covering Selden patent (that threatened to once destroy the Ford Motor Company), the European automobile advanced far with engineering and design thanks to a greater sense of cooperation in the formative years of personal motorized transportation. The global automotive industry have apparently learned the lessons that corporate co-operations can bring to aligned parties. Announcing a future collaboration in the research of lithium-ion batteries, BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation have secured a partnership that intends to work towards the next-generation of electric vehicles. A technical agreement signed back in December of 2011, targets for “mid-to-long-term” ramifications for battery construction is seen for BMW and Toyota vehicles. Battery design and materials will be analyzed in order to improve several key features in future electrical power packs. The auto companies alliance’s seeks to obtain new heights in battery performance and capacity that will also minimize environmental impact. With both parties planning to gain important data from the battery research, BMW’s upcoming release of the BMW i sub group has vehicle electrification at the forefront. Offering the BMW i3 sometime next year, the all-electric car is slated to run up to 100 miles on a single battery charge. Modified 1-Series (called the BMW ActiveE ) and Mini E are part of a real world trial of electric car technology. Some of BMW’s electric cars will also be part of the 2012 London Olympic Games where the German vehicle maker is an official event partner. Toyota’s involvement in electrified motoring is well-documented with their pioneering a production worthy gasoline/electric powertrain called Hybrid Synergy Drive. Highlighted on the Toyota Prius for what is 15 years in Japan and over a decade in the United States, over three million vehicles with Hybrid Synergy Drive were sold in March of 2011. What is interesting is Toyota currently uses the Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack with Hybrid Synergy Drive. Lithium-ion battery power will debut on the Prius when the plug-in hybrid version of the car arrives this year. With much of the auto industry behind lithium-ion battery power based on its better energy capacity, Toyota’s future intentions of is to phase-out Nickel-Metal Hydride technology. It is unsure if the alliance with BMW will progress quickly enough to net advantages for the next-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive system. ? ? In the past five months, the auto industry’s climate of partnership and strategic alliances have been rampant. Taking varying forms, the results of these mutual collaborations will see the emergence of several automotive advancements. General Motors has been busy constructing three unique alliances for different areas of development. A deal with Teijin for creating lower-cost, high-production carbon fiber, a vehicle development partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroen and a pending deal with BMW on possible fuel cell technology is part of General Motors most recent group dealings. Chrysler Group and Ford Motor Company were gained heavy assistance in the creation of two important vehicles for their 2013 model year. With the 2013 Dodge Dart using the platform architecture of a Fiat Group product, the all-new Ford Fusion receives exterior design from the studios of premium British sports car builder Aston Martin. Apart from the striking design of the 2013 Fusion, the most surprising aspect of Ford’s mid-sized sedan was why such beautiful creativity could not be sculpted when the two were deeply aligned corporately through the mid-1990s to 2007. Arrangements where resources can be pooled for more, better research, the end-result of the BMW/Toyota partnership for battery development should be a future of longer range, less expensive electric vehicles for drivers. ? Redesigned Hyundai Sonata in 2014

Ever since the current generation Hyundai Sonata launched in 2010, the car has emerged as one of the leading players in the mid-size sedan segment. Style and interior design as well as a competitive engine lineup have helped spur this development. As always though, the competition never stands still. Surprisingly, American manufacturers are fielding the strongest efforts, with Ford is readying the new 2013 Fusion for a launch this year and Chevrolet the 2013 Malibu. Toyota ceded a lot of ground with the new Camry, giving competitors space by failing to push the envelope. Purely on aesthetics and specifications, the Fusion looks like the cream of the new mid-size sedan crop – but we’ll have to find out once we get a chance to test them all. For Hyundai to stay on top, continuous improvement is needed. According to Chief Executive Officer Kim Choon-ho via Reuters , the next-generation model is coming in 2014. This shows that the company isn’t trying to extend successful product cycles, which is a good thing for consumers. We expect the car’s styling to move away from the current swoopy, fluidic sculpture design language of the current car. The Sonata was one of the first products to debut this from Hyundai, and especially on cars like the Azera, it has become overwrought. Recent Hyundai concepts such as the i-oniq are showing a flatter, less involved design language. That has carried over to the newest product debut as well, the Sante Fe SUV which has a styling language dubbed “Storm Edge.” Once again, the Sonata could lead the way for the next-generation of Hyundai styling. Expect the car to be shown sometime next year given Choon-ho’s timeline. Other than that, not many more details are known. Also in the article is news that the redesigned rear-wheel drive Genesis will debut in late 2013. We’re really looking forward to that. No related posts.
